Nokia’s landscape of lakes invites you to enjoy nature. The City of Nokia is nestled by lakes and river rapids, and the hiking trails offered within the city area take you to the heart of tranquil natural landscapes. The Ruutana Nature Conservation Area with its forest lake is like a hidden treasure trove lush with hazel and ostrich ferns.
The Ruutana Nature Trail starts from the parking area at the end of the Haukankatu street. The roughly four-kilometre trail is easy to travel and marked in the terrain with signposts. Habitats of many types are found along the trail. Halfway through the trail, there is a maintained campfire site by Lake Ruutanajärvi.
At the beginning of the trail, the path runs through stretches of herb-rich and dry heath forest. Closer to the Ruutana Nature Conservation Area and Lake Ruutanajärvi, the environment turns into a lush grove with handsome hazels adorning the views. Tall ostrich ferns flank the stream running south from the lake, with lungwort and mezereon among the flowering species that colour the views in the spring.
The bird species found in the grove include the tawny owl and the spotted nutcracker that relies on the hazel shrubs. Remnants of the Ice Ace are still visible in the large boulder fields seen when climbing onto Ruutananvuori hill, the highest point in the City of Nokia. Huge erratic boulders can be spotted here and there.
